Cornea

One of the most important parts of the human eye is the cornea, which is essentially an outer layer that protects our eyes from the elements. It is also used to focus light that comes into our eyes. Believe it or not, the cornea can repair itself if it does suffer an injury. Iris

Our eyes are truly incredible for many different reasons. One of the most interesting things about the eye is that everyone has their own eye color. The colored part of the eye is known as the iris. Even though you might think that its only purpose is to provide an individual with their eye color, the iris actually works to adjust the size of our pupils. It has small muscles that will contract or expand based on the right amount of light that the pupil needs to fully process images.

Pupils

If you’ve ever been to an eye exam before, you are probably familiar with the process of getting your pupils dilated. The pupil is the black circle in the very center of our eyes. Its function is to help regulate the amount of light that comes into our eyes. Our pupils will contract and become smaller when we are exposed to extremely bright lights and expand in darker environments to let more light in. It’s truly amazing to think about how our eyes and pupils are constantly working to help us see the world in a clear way.

Lens

Behind the pupil lies the lens, which is a part of the eye that is responsible for helping us focus on the small details of the world. For example, when you are reading a book your lens is constantly making adjustments to help out with the details it is receiving. As we get older, the lens can lose its elasticity and lead to conditions like cataracts.

Retina

Towards the back of our eyes lies the retina, which is the part of the eye that receives a visual message from the front of the eye and transmits it to the brain. The retina is a very important part of the eye that allows us to process images in our brain.
