What Is Eyelid Surgery?Eyelid surgery—also known as blepharoplasty— is a procedure commonly used for cosmetic purposes, but this operation can also be used to recover vision loss. As we age, our eyelids droop. This phenomenon not only makes us look older and wearier, but it can also have negative effects on our eyesight. Sometimes, the folds of the eyelids can obstruct our line of vision, making it difficult to see. Eyelid surgery can correct this unfortunate condition.
Am I A Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?Only a trained ophthalmologist can determine whether or not you’re a good candidate for eyelid surgery. When you come into the office for a consultation, Dr. Opatowsky will meet with you and perform an initial eye examination, paying particular attention to the condition of your eyelids. He will then discuss your goals for the procedure and what outcome you can expect.
During this initial consultation, your eye doctor will also discuss the risks of the operation as well as how the procedure is performed. You will have a chance to ask any questions you have about eyelid surgery at this time, and the doctor will make a recommendation as to the best course of action.
What to Expect Before, During and After Eyelid Surgery?Prior to eyelid surgery, your ophthalmologist will perform another eye examination as well as a vision test. He will also take pictures of your eyelids from different angles. Once the procedure has begun, you’ll receive a small injection above your eye to numb the area. The doctor will then make a tiny incision to remove any excess skin, muscle, or fat.
Eyelid surgery is usually an outpatient procedure, so you should be able to go home the same day. You will need to rest and apply a cold pack to your eyes for a day or two after the operation. Any bruising and swelling of the eyelids should subside within two weeks.
